From *աշտ(*ašt), from Middle Persian *ašt, from Old Persian *𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎫𐎡(aršti-, spear) (attested in 𐎢𐎺𐎠𐎼𐏁𐎫𐎡𐎣(uvārštika-, good spearman)). Related to Avestan 𐬀𐬭𐬱𐬙𐬌(aršti, spear, lance), Sanskrit ऋष्टि(ṛṣṭí, spear, lance) and more distantly to Persian خشت(xešt, javelin, dart, spear), Kurdish [script needed](heš). Also from Iranian: Avar гӏащтӏи(ʿaš̄ṭi).
