An Iranian borrowing. Compare Avestan [script needed] ‎(apaharəzana, dismissal), composed of [script needed] ‎(apa-, away) and [script needed] ‎(harəz-, to dismiss, to let) = Persian هلیدن ‎(hilīdan, to dismiss). Cognate with Sanskrit अपसर्जन ‎(apasarjana, abandonment). Related to արձակ ‎(arjak).

The word referred to putting away of the wife by the husband. In modern Armenian it refers to the legal dissolution of marriage initiated by either of the spouses.
