The original spelling is արաւս (araws), of uncertain origin. Perhaps from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *arəw-ns-, from *h₂erh₃- (to plow); cognates include Ancient Greek ἄρουρα (ároura), Middle Irish arbor, Old Armenian հարաւունք (harawunkʻ).
