Nursery word, perhaps of (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European origin. Compare Ancient Greek ἀπφῦς (apphûs, daddy), ἄπφα (áppha, endearing address between brothers and sisters, also beloved ones), Tocharian B āppo (father).
