Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan tentatively suggests derivation from Proto-Armenian *god-i- (worship, pagan cult), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷʰedʰ-, *gʷʰodʰ-. See also գոդի (godi) and գոդի (godi).
