Old Armenian

Etymology

Attested in the 5th century. Of uncertain derivation. Ačaṙyan leaves the origin of the word open.

According to J̌ahukyan, perhaps inherited from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *erebʰ- (dark reddish, brownish) +‎ -իլ (-il). See Pokorny for this root (without the Armenian), which is found in many animal and plant names because of their color, such as German Erpel, Old Irish ibar (yew), Czech jeřáb, etc.
