Perhaps from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *kʰ₂ul-ieh₂- and cognate with Ancient Greek κήλη (kḗlē, “tumour; rupture, hernia”), Old Norse haull (“rupture, hernia”), Russian кила (kila). Alternatively, related to Russian шуло́ (šuló, “testicle”).
