Etymology

The older spelling is ծծում (ccum), reduplicated from an unknown root *ծում (*cum); compare the Georgian borrowing წუმწუმა (c̣umc̣uma, sulfur; match).

According to J̌ahukyan, this root may be related to the Mediterranean source of Latin sulfur.
