Perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *gol- and cognate with Proto-Slavic *golьje, whence Ukrainian гілля ‎(hilljá, branch), dialectal Russian голья ‎(gol’já, branch), Slovene gólje ‎(twigs without leaves). Relation to կող ‎(koł) is also possible. It is uncertain whether Zazaki kōlī ‎(wood, firewood) is related.
