Etymology

Perhaps from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *gol- and cognate with Proto-Slavic *golьje, whence Ukrainian гілля́ (hilljá, branch), dialectal Russian голья́ (golʹjá, branch), Slovene gólje (twigs without leaves). Relation to կող (koł) is also possible. It is uncertain whether Zazaki kōlī (wood, firewood) is related.
