Etymology

An Iranian borrowing: compare Parthian 𐭇‎𐭆‎𐭓𐭅𐭐𐭕 (ḥ‎z‎rwpt), Middle Persian 𐭧𐭦𐭠𐭫‎𐭥𐭯𐭲 (ḥzʾl‎wpt). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *hazahrapati-. For the constituents see հազար (hazar) and պետ (pet). Also borrowed as Georgian ჰაზარაპეტი (hazaraṗeṭi), Ancient Greek ἀζαραπατεῖς (azarapateîs), ἀζαβαρίτης (azabarítēs), Classical Syriac ܗܙܪܦܬ (hzrpt /⁠hzārpat⁠/).
