Borrowed from an unidentified cognate of Sumerian 𒄭𒄑𒊬 (hiz), Ugaritic [script needed] (ḥḏrṯ), Hebrew חזרת(ḥzrt), Akkadian 𒄭𒄑𒊬 (ḫisu), Aramaic חַסָּא(ḥassā), Classical Syriac ܚ̈ܲܣܸܐ(ḥassā), Hebrew חַסָּה(ḥássā), Arabic خَسّ(ḵass, lettuce). Hittite 𒄩𒋗𒍑𒊭𒊏𒀀𒀭 (ḫa-šu-uš-ša-ra-a-an /ḫašuššara-/, an unidentified garden vegetable) may also be related.
