Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian hcʾl ‎(hazār) (Manichaean Middle Persian hzʾr), from Iranian *hazahrā, from Proto-Indo-European *(sm̥-)ǵʰéslo-. Indo-Iranian cognates include Pashto زر ‎(zër), Baluchi ہزار ‎(hazár), Kurdish ههزار ‎(hazār), Ossetian æрзæ ‎(ærzæ), and Sanskrit सहस्र ‎(sa-hásra). Akin to Old Armenian հազար ‎(hazar), a Middle Iranian borrowing.
