Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian hcʾl(hazār) (Manichaean Middle Persian hzʾr), from Iranian *hazahrā, from Proto-Indo-European *(sm̥-)ǵʰéslo-. Indo-Iranian cognates include Pashto زر(zër), Baluchi ہزار(hazár), Kurdish ههزار(hazār), Ossetian æрзæ(ærzæ), and Sanskrit सहस्र(sa-hásra). Akin to Old Armenian հազար(hazar), a Middle Iranian borrowing.
