Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian hcʾl (/hazār/) (Manichaean Middle Persian [script needed] (hzʾr)), from Proto-Iranian *hajáhram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *saȷ́ʰásram, from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-ǵʰéslom.

Indo-Iranian cognates include Pashto زر(zër), Baluchi ہزار(hazár), Central Kurdish ھەزار(hezar), Ossetian ӕрзӕ (ærzæ), and Sanskrit सहस्र (sa-hásra). Akin to Old Armenian հազար (hazar), a Middle Iranian borrowing.
