Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain; perhaps from Parthian 𐫍𐫏𐫇𐫗𐫅‎* (hywnd‎* /hēwand/), from Proto-Iranian *hayawantah, from *hayas (illness) +‎ *-wantah (adjectival suffix)[1], possibly from Proto-Iranian *hāi- (to bind), from Proto-Indo-European *sHēy- (to bind). Compare also Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (hyndk'), 𐫟𐫏𐫗𐫅𐫃 (xyndg /xīndag/, sick, ill).
