Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain.

According to Yakubovich, from Parthian *hēwand, that can go back to Proto-Iranian *haya-want-, containing the adjectival suffix *-want- and *haya- ‎(illness), perhaps from the root *√hāi- ‎(to bind), from Proto-Indo-European *sHēi- ‎(to bind).

Compare also Middle Persian hy(w)ndkyh ‎(*xindagīh, illness), Manichaean Middle Persian xyndg ‎(*xīndag, sick, ill).
