Etymology[edit]

An Iranian borrowing. Compare Old Persian 𐎴𐎳𐎫 ‎(naft), Persian نفت ‎(naft). Armenian նավթ ‎(navtʿ) is a modern borrowing; the regular development from Old Armenian նաւթ ‎(nawtʿ) would have been նոթ ‎(notʿ), indeed found in some dialects.
