Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. Perhaps created by the Hellenophile school from ներ(ner, in) and փողոց(pʿołocʿ, street), translating Ancient Greek ἐγκώμιον(enkṓmion, laudatory ode, praise), from ἐν(en, in) and κῶμος(kômos, festival, procession in the streets). For the unusual spelling instead of *ներփող(*nerpʿoł) see բդեդ(bded).
