Etymology

Learned borrowing from Middle Armenian շահնշահ (šahnšah), from Persian شاهنشاه (šâhanšâh).

   • 1882, Raffi, Davitʿ Bek [Davit Bek] :

     […] պարսից շահնշահը Բայինդուր իշխանի անպարտելի ուժի համար նրան բաթման-ղլիճ տիտղոս էր տվել, որ նշանակում է` մի բաթմանի ծանրությամբ թուր կրող։

     […] parsicʻ šahnšahə Bayindur išxani anparteli uži hamar nran batʻman-ġlič titġos ēr tvel, or nšanakum ē` mi batʻmani canrutʻyamb tʻur kroġ.

     ...the Persian shahanshah had granted the title batman-ghlich [batman-kılıç] to prince Bayindur for his invincible strength, which means "bearing a sword weighing one batman".

   • 1896, Muratsan, Gevorg Marzpetuni :

     Այս ամենից հետո` ամիրան ուղարկում է շահնշահին արժանավայել ընծաներ, որոնց և խնդրում է ընդունել` իբր իսկական հավաստիք դեպի հայոց ազգն ու թագավորը ունեցած յուր անկեղծ բարեկամության։

     Ays amenicʻ heto` amiran uġarkum ē šahnšahin aržanavayel əncaner, oroncʻ ew xndrum ē əndunel` ibr iskakan havastikʻ depi hayocʻ azgn u tʻagavorə unecʻac yur ankeġc barekamutʻyan.

     After all of this the amir sends becoming gifts to the shahanshah and asks to accept them as a genuine token of his sincere friendship to the Armenian nation and king.

   • 1988, Tadevos Hakobyan, Ani mayrakʿałakʿ [Capital Ani] :

     961 թվականին Բագրատունի Աշոտ 3-րդը, որ կրում էր Ողորմած մականունը, Անիում, հանդիսավոր պայմաններում օծվում է Հայոց թագավոր՝ «շահնշահ» (թագավորաց թագավոր) տիտղոսով։

     961 tʻvakanin Bagratuni Ašot 3-rdə, or krum ēr Oġormac makanunə, Anium, handisavor paymannerum ōcvum ē Hayocʻ tʻagavor, “šahnšah” (tʻagavoracʻ tʻagavor) titġosov.

     In the year 961 Ashot III Bagratuni, who bore the byname Merciful, was solemnly anointed in Ani as the king of Armenia with the title "shahanshah" (king of kings).
