Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek σίκλος ‎(síklos), σίγλος ‎(síglos) borrowed from Hebrew שקל ‎(shékel). The Greek word gave also Latin siclus and together with it spread into other languages: compare French sicle, German Sekel and Russian сикл ‎(sikl), сикель ‎(sikelʹ).
