From Iranian *tabil. Compare Manichaean Parthian ṯbyl (tabil, tambourine, drum (?)), Ancient Greek ταβάλα (tabála), ταβῆλα (tabêla, Parthian word for a drum). Classical Syriac ܛܒܠܐ (ṭaḇlāʾ), Arabic طَبْل (ṭabl) and Turkish davul are from the same source.
