Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Semitic *ʔiš- (“fire”). Cognate with Akkadian 𒉈 (išātum, “fire”) and Ge'ez እሳት (ʾəsat, “fire”).

- Tanach, Exodus 3:2:
- וַיֵּרָא מַלְאַךְ ה׳ אֵלָיו בְּלַבַּת אֵשׁ מִתּוֹךְ הַסְּנֶה וַיַּרְא וְהִנֵּה הַסְּנֶה בֹּעֵר בָּאֵשׁ וְהַסְּנֶה אֵינֶנּוּ אֻכָּל׃

Usage notes[edit]
- The plural אִשִּׁים (ishím) is not used in Modern Hebrew.
