[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]From בַּל (bál, “without”) + עֲדֵי (adéi, “until”).
Preposition
[edit]בִּלְעֲדֵי • (bil'adéi)
- without, in the absence of
Usage notes
[edit]- The preposition בִּלְעֲדֵי is typically only used in its inflected forms, that is, when its object is a personal pronoun. In other cases, the preposition בְּלִי (b'lí) is usually used instead. (For example, “without Ruth” is בְּלִי רוּת (b'lí rút), while “without her” is בִּלְעָדֵיהָ (bil'adéiha).) In a sense, therefore, בִּלְעֲדֵי can be said to provide the inflected forms of בְּלִי.
