Etymology[edit]

Ultimately from Wolof banaana, via various European languages. The sense girl (usually in the plural ⁧בָּנָנוֹת(bananot, girls) is presumably influenced by the phonetic similarity with ⁧בָּנוֹת⁩ f pl (banót, girls).
