[edit]Likely via German Chlor or French chlore, from English chlorine, itself derived from Ancient Greek χλωρός (khlōrós, “pale green”) + -ine.
Compare also Yiddish כלאָר (khlor), Polish chlor and Russian хлор (xlor) for the phonetic influence.
