Etymology

[edit]

Seemingly a blend of West Germanic -k-final forms (compare Dutch kroniek, German Chronik) and East Slavic хр- (xr-)-initial forms (compare Belarusian and Ukrainian хро́ніка (xrónika), Russian хро́ника (xrónika) but Polish kronika). Ultimately from Latin chronica, from Ancient Greek χρονικός (khronikós, of or concerning time), from χρόνος (khrónos, time).
