From a diminutive of Old High German magad (maiden) (compare German Mädel), from Proto-Germanic *magaþs, from Proto-Indo-European *magh(u)- (young person). Synchronically, מויד (moyd, maiden, lass; maid) +‎ ־ל (-l).
