[edit]Etymology
[edit]Metathesis from Akkadian 𒌗𒀳 (itiwaraḫsamnu, literally “the eighth month”). Folk etymology popularly but incorrectly derives it from מר (mar, “bitter”) + חשוון (ḥeshvan, “Cheshvan”), on account of its lack of holidays.
