From the root מ־שׁ־ח /ܡ-ܫ-ܚ (m-š-ḥ) related to anointing. Compare Arabic مَسَحَ (masaḥa), from cognate root م س ح (m-s-ḥ), and Ugaritic 𐎎𐎌𐎈 (mšḥ).
