Yiddish

Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German egedëhse, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German egidehsa (lizard). The shift in meaning is found in various High German dialects; the irregular change from Middle High German hs to Yiddish š, rather than the expected *ks, is particular to Yiddish, and may have been spread by biblical translations into the vernacular.

Noun

עקדיש (ekdishm, plural עקדישן (ekdishn)

  1. scorpion (any of various arachnids of the order Scorpiones)
