[edit]From آق (ak, “white”) + كرمان (kerman, “fortified town”), a calque of Byzantine Greek Ασπρόκαστρον (Asprókastron), from άσπρος (áspros, “white”) + κάστρον (kástron, “castle, stronghold”). Compare Romanian Cetatea Albă, Ukrainian Бі́лгород (Bílhorod) and German Weißenburg.
