Etymology
From Ottoman Turkish قرهگوز (karagöz, “blackeye; a character used in traditional Turkish shadow play”), probably through Egyptian Arabic قرجوز (ʔaragōz, “Clown”) hence why the /q/ to /ʔ/ change was imported through Egyptian pronunciation of ⟨ق⟩.
