Etymology

From Ottoman Turkish قره‌گوز (karagöz, blackeye; a character used in traditional Turkish shadow play), probably through Egyptian Arabic قرجوز (ʔaragōz, Clown) hence why the /q/ to /ʔ/ change was imported through Egyptian pronunciation of ⟨ق⟩.
