[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Ancient Greek σφήν (sphḗn, “wedge”), probably also through Classical Syriac ܐܣܦܢܐ (ʾespēnā), ܣܦܝܢܐ (sp̄īnā, “wedge”). However in the sense sphene, titanite its alternative form has, it is from French sphène from the same Greek word, for mineralogist René Just Haüy has coined this name in 1801 (Traité de minéralogie vol. 3 p. 114).
Noun
[edit]إِسْفِين • (ʔisfīn) m (plural أَسَافِين (ʔasāfīn))
- wedge (in many senses, including in wedge-writing and as a simple machine)
