Arabic

Etymology

From the root ن ث ر (n-ṯ-r).

Verb

اِنْتَثَرَ (intaṯara) VIII (non-past يَنْتَثِرُ (yantaṯiru), verbal noun اِنْتِثَار (intiṯār))

  1. to become dispersed, to become dissipated, to become scattered.
    • 609–632 CE, Qur'an, 82:1-5:
      إِذَا السَّمَاء انْفَطَرَتْ
      وَإِذَا الْكَوَاكِبُ انْتَثَرَتْ
      وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ فُجِّرَتْ
      وَإِذَا الْقُبُورُ بُعْثِرَتْ
      عَلِمَتْ نَفْسٌ مَّا قَدَّمَتْ وَأَخَّرَتْ
      When the sky breaks apart,
And when the stars commence to scatter,
And when the seas gush forth,
And when the graves are strewn,
A soul will know what it has put forward and what it has set back.
