[edit]From Middle Persian [script needed] (gʾwls /gāwars/, “sorghum, giant millet”), whence Persian گاورس (gâvars, “Setaria viridis”), Classical Syriac ܓܘܪܘܣ (gwrws /gāwarws/, “millet”), Old Armenian գաւարս (gawars), Roshani [script needed] (ǰäwaws), Khufi [script needed] (jawōwc, “millet”), Yidgha [script needed] (ɣawarso), from Old Iranian *gāwarsa-.[1][2] Cognate with Northern Kurdish garis (“Panicum miliaceum”), Hindi ज्वार (jvār, “greater millet”).
