Etymology[edit]

A vulgarised version of Ottoman Turkish سبزوات (sebzevat, zebzevat, zevzevat, zavzavat), itself from سبزی ((vulg.) sebze, vegetable, greenery) +‎ ـات (-at, Arabic plural forming suffix) which is ultimately from Persian سبزی (sabzi, vegetable). Also see Persian سبزیجات (vegetables), a similar formation.
