Etymology

Uncertain etymology; perhaps from زَمْهَر (zamhar, bloodshot eyes, angry eyes), perhaps in reference to color; bolstered by خَزِرَ (ḵazira, to squint, to contract one's eyes) and شَزَرَ (šazara, to give a shifty look, to glance with hatred in one's eyes) used in its synonyms. The ending possibly suggests the Iranian adjective suffix *-ak, *-āk; compare the synonyms شَزْرِيق (šazrīq) and خَزْرِيق (ḵazrīq). Alternatively, the ending is related to زَرَق (zaraq, blindness; the color blue) or Aramaic זרג (zāreḡ, eyes shining, glistening; pale red wine or amethyst color).
