From the root ش ل ل (š-l-l) meaning "to be taken away", "to pour forth or scatter", "to drive away or chasing off in groups"; applied to herds of camels and to companies of men.

Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܫܶܠܳܠܳܐ (šillā, skein), cognate with Arabic سَلِيلَة (salīla, oblong strips of muscles; a long slice of material;); see also شَلِيل (šalīl, wrap of cloth used as padding under the rear of a camel's saddle).
