Gulf Arabic[edit]
Alternative forms[edit]
- سطار (sṭār /ṣṭār/)
Etymology[edit]
From Arabic سَطَرَ (saṭara). Compare Hebrew סְטִירָה (s'tira, “slap”). The /s/ became fully emphasised due to proximity to an emphatic. Compare similar development for the word for ruler from the same root: مصطرة (maṣṭara), and the word for line, row: صطر (ṣaṭir).
Noun[edit]
صْطار • (ṣṭār) m (dual صطارين (ṣṭārēn), plural صْطارات (ṣṭārāt))
