From the root ع ي ر (ʕ-y-r); the sense of ass is else encountered in Hebrew עַיִר (ʿayr, male ass), Ugaritic 𐎓𐎗 (ʿr, ass), Akkadian 𒄩𒀀𒊏𒄠 (/⁠ḫâru⁠/, male ass, foal) (a West-Semitic borrowing), Mehri ḥayr (male donkey), Harsusi ḥayr (donkey), Shehri aḥyɛ́r.
