Arabic

Etymology

Probably from Latin camisia, from Proto-Germanic *hamiþiją. Compare Classical Syriac ܩܡܝܨܬܐ (qamīṣtāʾ).

A minority of scholars think that the Latin word is indeed borrowed from Semitic. The principal witness for this theory is a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ugaritic form /qms/, seemingly meaning “garment”. However, this word is not attested in any other old Semitic language.
