Etymology

Derived from a variant of the root ك ه ر ب (k-h-r-b) having in the word كَهْرَبَاء (kahrabāʔ) originally the meaning “amber” and subsequently meanings related to electricity for the electric attraction properties of amber. Derived from the Persian کهربا (kahrobâ), from Persian کاه (kâh, straw) + ربا (robâ, magnet), ultimately from Middle Persian khlpʾd (kah-rubāy, amber).
