From Middle Persian [script needed] (mwlwʾlyt' /⁠morwārīd⁠/), mlwʾlyt (marwārīd), [Manichaean needed] (mwrwʾryd /⁠morwārīd⁠/), 𐬨𐬏𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬁𐬭𐬍𐬝 (/⁠mūravārīt̰⁠/), from Old Persian *margārīta-. Akin to Manichaean Parthian [Manichaean needed] (mwrgʾryd /⁠morγārīd⁠/), Sogdian [script needed] (mrγʾrt(h) /⁠marγārt, marγārit⁠/), Pashto مرغلره (murghalara), Khotanese [script needed] pl (mrāhe, pearl), Central Kurdish مرواری (mirwarî). Possibly related to Sanskrit मञ्जरी (mañjarī). Also compare Ancient Greek μαργαρίτης (margarítēs), Old Armenian մարգարիտ (margarit), Old Georgian მარგარიტი (margariṭi), მარგალიტი (margaliṭi), Abkhaz а-мыркы́лд (a-mərkʼə́ld), а-маркы́лд (a-markʼə́ld, mother-of-pearl), Iranian borrowings.
