From Middle Persian [script needed] (mwlwʾlyt' /morwārīd/), mlwʾlyt (marwārīd), [Manichaean needed] (mwrwʾryd /morwārīd/), 𐬨𐬏𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬁𐬭𐬍𐬝 (/mūravārīt̰/), from Old Persian *margārīta-. Akin to Manichaean Parthian [Manichaean needed] (mwrgʾryd /morγārīd/), Sogdian [script needed] (mrγʾrt(h) /marγārt, marγārit/), Pashto مرغلره (murghalara), Khotanese [script needed] pl (mrāhe, “pearl”), Central Kurdish مرواری (mirwarî). Possibly related to Sanskrit मञ्जरी (mañjarī). Also compare Ancient Greek μαργαρίτης (margarítēs), Old Armenian մարգարիտ (margarit), Old Georgian მარგარიტი (margariṭi), მარგალიტი (margaliṭi), Abkhaz а-мыркы́лд (a-mərkʼə́ld), а-маркы́лд (a-markʼə́ld, “mother-of-pearl”), Iranian borrowings.
