Etymology

From French maquillage, from Proto-West Germanic *makōn (to build, work, make). The widespread pronunciation with initial mi- by analogy with the measure مِفْعال (mifʕāl), as in مِفْتاح (miftāḥ), مِسْمار (mismār), etc.

Pronunciation

  • The final consonant is distinguished in northern Egypt, where /d͡ʒ/ is [ɡ], sometimes also in other accents that do not pronounce [ʒ] anyway.
