Etymology

[edit]

Derived from the Aramaic borrowing نُشْبَة (nušba, snare), for which reason نُشْبَة (nušba) was retained as a verbal noun of the denominal base stem. Then from its meanings of “sticking” a figurative sense of “meddling, entangling” into an affair developed, lastly this was transferred to the current most common sense of a matter getting hot and breaking out. A side sense development rather emphasized gathering things, until نَشَب (našab) meant “wealth, property, fortune” (rather than because one sticks to it), hence another base stem “to yield, to produce”.

نُشَّاب (nuššāb), نُشَاب (nušāb, arrow) is a separate borrowing from Aramaic, from which the occupational noun نَشَّاب (naššāb, archer) was formed.
