From a metathesis of the variant form ܡܚܲܛܵܐ (mḥaṭṭā), from Aramaic מְחַטָא (məḥaṭṭā), tool noun of the verb ܚܵܐܹܛ (ḥāˀēṭ, to sew); related to Arabic مِخْيَط (miḵyaṭ), Hebrew מַחַט (mákhat).
