Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܚܡ, from Aramaic חֲמַם (ḥămam); compare Arabic حَمَّ (ḥamma) and Hebrew הִתְחַמֵּם (hitkhamém). Doublet of the alternate native form ܚܵܐܸܡ (ḥāˀim), inherited from Aramaic.
