Etymology
[edit]Literally, “May they inquire about you in goodness”.
Phrase
[edit]ܡܒܲܩܪܝܼܢ݇ ܒܵܟ݂ܝ ܒܛܵܒ݂̈ܵܬ݂ܵܐ • (mbaqrī bāḵ bṭāḇāṯā)
- A response when inquired about a person’s well doing
- ܕܐܲܟ݂ ܝܠܹܗ ܒܵܒܵܟ݂ܝ؟ ܛܵܒ݂ܵܐ ܝܠܹܗ ܫܟܝܼܪ ܐܲܠܵܗܵܐ، ܡܒܲܩܪܝܼܢ݇ ܒܵܟ݂ܝ ܒܛܵܒ݂̈ܵܬ݂ܵܐ ― d-aḵ ìlēh bābāḵ? ṭāḇā ìlēh škīr allāhā, mbaqrī bāḵ bṭāḇāṯā ― How is your father? He is good thanks be to God, may they inquire about you in goodness.
Usage notes
[edit]- The first part of this phrase ܡܒܲܩܪܝܼܢ݇ ― mbaqrī ― May they ask, is always in the 3rd person plural form.
- This is said to a single female; the masculine singular is ܡܒܲܩܪܝܼܢ݇ ܒܘܿܟ݂ ܒܛܵܒ݂̈ܵܬ݂ܵܐ (mbaqrī bōḵ bṭāḇāṯā), and the plural is ܡܒܲܩܪܝܼܢ݇ ܒܲܘܟ݂ܘܿܢ ܒܛܵܒ݂̈ܵܬ݂ܵܐ (mbaqrī bawḵōn bṭāḇāṯā).
