Etymology
[edit]Etymology tree
Inherited from Old Dhivehi 𑤀𑤛𑤵𑤮𑤳 (ateḷu), perhaps from Proto-New Indo-Aryan *𑀲𑀁𑀢𑀻𑀞 (*saṃtīṭha), *𑀲𑀁𑀢𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀞 (*saṃtiṭṭha), from Sanskrit *संतीर्थ (*saṃtīrtha, “level ford”), from सम्- (sam-) + तीर्थ (tīrtha).[1] The alternative popular etymology, from Persian آبتل (âb-tal, “water-hillock”), is now considered untenable.
