Noun
[edit]अनुप्रास • (anuprāsa) stem, m
- (prosody) alliteration
- c. 700 CE, Daṇḍin, Kāvyādarśa 1.55:
- वर्णावृत्तिर् अनुप्रासः पादेषु च पदेषु च ।
पूर्वानुभवसंस्कारबोधिनी यद्यदूरता ॥- varṇāvṛttir anuprāsaḥ pādeṣu ca padeṣu ca.
pūrvānubhavasaṃskārabodhinī yadyadūratā. - Alliteration is the rolling of (certain) syllables in metrical feet as well as in words,
If the collocation is intent upon creating the recall of prior impressions.
- varṇāvṛttir anuprāsaḥ pādeṣu ca padeṣu ca.
- वर्णावृत्तिर् अनुप्रासः पादेषु च पदेषु च ।
Usage notes
[edit]- Although commonly translated as alliteration in literary works and dictionaries, the concept of अनुप्रास (anuprāsa) in Sanskrit poetry is broader than what is typical of alliteration in English prosody. The element being repeated can be a syllable-like fragment, which doesn't necessarily appear at the initial positions of words or metrical units.
