Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. The hapax legomenon कियाम्बु (kiyāmbu, “water-lily”) appears to be a prefixed form of this word. Together with it and अम्भस् (ámbhas), it may be of substrate origin. Perhaps a Prakritic or IE substratum of Proto-Indo-European *n̥bʰrós, compare Ancient Greek ὄμβρος (ómbros, “water”).

Alternatively from Dravidian, compare Tamil அம் (am), Kumarbhag Paharia [script needed] (amu); or Austroasiatic, compare Khasi um, Santali [script needed] (um, “to bathe”).[1]
