Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀑𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆- (*okk-). Cognate to Gujarati ઓકવું (okavũ), Marathi ओकणे (okṇe). Perhaps related to Kannada ಒಕ್ಕರಿಸು (okkarisu).
